From signing up to making sure they have the right coverage, we\u2019ll assist you in getting your parents set up on Medicare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whether you\u2019ll be responsible for your parents\u2019 healthcare or you\u2019re just helping out, the first step is to learn the fundamentals of Medicare. Contrary to popular belief, Original\u00a0Medicare isn\u2019t free\u00a0and doesn\u2019t pay for everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Part A\u00a0is inpatient, and\u00a0Part B\u00a0is outpatient coverage. When you hear about\u00a0Part C, this refers to an Advantage plan, which private insurance companies offer. Some Advantage plans include\u00a0Part D. But, if you select Medigap or Medicare, standalone Part D is available to enroll in separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\u00a0Medicare Supplement plans\u00a0that are most popular include;\u00a0Plan F,\u00a0Plan G, and\u00a0Plan N. Although depending on your parents\u2019 eligibility, they may not qualify for all three plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Signing up\u00a0is relatively simple and is done through Social Security. Remember that each of your parents become eligible in their own time, and marriage doesn\u2019t factor into enrollment. Each person enrolls separately during their\u00a0Initial Enrollment Period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If your parent is collecting\u00a0Social Security, enrollment in Medicare is automatic. But, you\u2019ll want to speak to your parent(s) about their coverage needs to make sure they have the correct health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The most significant aspects to consider are their health and budget. Also, be sure to weigh the importance of their preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How important are their doctors? If they\u2019re considering an Advantage plan, you\u2019ll need to make sure their preferred practitioners are in-network. If your parent frequently needs to see specialists, an Advantage plan might not be the best option. In Advantage plans, patients often need referrals to see specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Do your parents\u00a0plan to travel\u00a0outside of the United States? If so, Supplement plans would be a wise choice for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Be sure not only to consider your parents\u2019 current health and finances but also the future. Sometimes higher premiums can keep overall costs lower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Enrolling in Part D sooner than later is a wise choice. Even if your parents aren\u2019t on any prescriptions, what they save in drug costs over the years can easily outweigh the premiums they\u2019ll pay upfront.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If your parents need financial help with Medicare, there are several\u00a0savings programs\u00a0available. These can be worth looking into even if your parents\u2019 income and assets exceed the limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you\u2019re going to be more heavily involved in your parents\u2019 Medicare coverage, you\u2019ll need them each to fill out the\u00a0Medicare Authorization to Disclose Personal Health Information form. If you\u2019re speaking to a carrier on their behalf, they might need to submit the form to the carrier. It\u2019s necessary to fill out this form even if you\u2019re translating a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond helping your parents learn more, enroll, and select coverage, you can help them stay safe and keep the best plan for them. Talk to your parent(s) about\u00a0fraud, waste, and abuse, and how they can avoid falling victim to it. Also, make sure they always pay their premiums, so their plan never lapses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each September, make sure you go over their\u00a0Annual Notice of Change\u00a0letter with them to make sure they\u2019re still happy with their coverage.
